How a chance discovery of a wallpaper fragment inspired the look of this country house bathroom

A piece of hand-painted Chinese style inspired this bathroom at Keythorpe Hall, Leicestershire.

Barbara Van Tiffelen and her partner Giles Godfrey bought Keythorpe Hall in Leicestershire just over 10 years ago. Having refurbished it, they now run a full service home accommodating up to 20 guests with an on-site team that cooks with local produce, much of which is grown in a nearly two-acre walled garden.

The adjoining bedroom was remodeled in the 1920s, and while working to restore the room to its original appearance, the couple removed the walled-in chimney to reveal hand-painted wallpaper of leaves, flowers and butterflies. “We knew we wanted to replicate his look, and then we found a very similar design by Watts of Westminster,” explains Ms. Van Tiffelen.

The next find was an aged brass freestanding shower, sourced through Drummonds. “We wanted to leave the architecture of the room intact and that was ideal because it meant there was no need to tile the wall.”

The faucets, washbasins and towel rack have been specially chosen from unlacquered brass because they will acquire a touch of age with age. “Of course, the original house didn’t have bathrooms, but the goal was to design a space that felt like it could be original—with modern and never-before-seen amenities like pressure showers and underfloor heating.” .

A crimson-colored clawfoot tub by Hurlingham, located in nearby Grantham, picks up some of the colors of the wallpaper.

Antique markets and shops in and around Rutland were searched for mirrors and lamps, and lampshades were purchased from Puka.
