Described as “one of the most beautiful homes in Brothy Ferry”, the Melfort Hotel offers first-class accommodation in a beautiful coastal location.
In 1927, Dundee architect and businessman George Morton decided to build himself a house. The place he chose? Broughty Ferry, four miles east of Dundee itself, and a place that boasts a beach, a castle, a museum and one of the best ice cream vendors in Scotland: Visocchi’s Café, which has been a local establishment since 1954.
It’s also a place with a mixture of large Victorian villas and quaint fishermen’s cottages, and as such, it was the perfect location for Morton’s proposed Melfort House, which is a significant family property designed and built in the Arts and Crafts style. This beautiful home is currently listed for sale through Savills for over £1 million.
Completely detached, sloping and with a slate roof, the hotel has been “thoroughly modernized” in recent years, but retains many of its old features.
In addition to seven bedrooms and four reception rooms, the home features a variety of styles and entertainment spaces.
The owners recently installed a games room and gym, as well as a brand new kitchen, while the tar pine staircase in the center of the home and hardwood floors throughout the home retain character.
As well as being a great home for families, it’s also the perfect idea for golfers: the hotel is almost equidistant between the open championship courses at Carnoustie, along the coast to the east, and St. Andrews, which is about 20 minutes away. you have crossed the Tay Bridge to Fife.
The town has several excellent pubs and restaurants, supermarkets, shops, a library, the Royal Tay Yacht Club, and primary and secondary schools (Eastern Primary and Grove Academy are within walking distance of the hotel).
Transport links are just as excellent, with train stations at Broughty Ferry and Dundee providing connections north and south, including a sleeper train to London. Dundee Airport also flies to London City Airport, Belfast City and Shetland.
Melfort is currently on the market through Savills with offers in excess of £1 million – see more photos or contact an agent for more information.
